Makassar does not change its clocks
A fixed offset, all year round
Makassar stays on Central Indonesia Time at UTC+08:00 every day of the year. There is no spring-forward or fall-back here, which puts it with the majority: most of the world's time zones do not observe daylight saving.
That sounds like it makes scheduling simpler, and locally it does — but it introduces a different trap for anyone working with Makassar from a country that does change clocks. The offset between you and Makassar is not constant: it changes when your clocks move, even though nothing changed here. A recurring call that has run at the same local time for months will shift by an hour, from your side, without anyone editing the invite.
When the gap to Makassar changes
Dates in the next year where the difference shifts, by counterpart city
The difference between two cities is not a constant. It changes whenever either side moves its clocks — and because regions switch on different dates, there are short windows each year when the usual gap is wrong. These are the dates that matter for Makassar:
London (United Kingdom)
- From 25 October 2026: Makassar is 8 hours ahead of London
- From 28 March 2027: Makassar is 7 hours ahead of London
Frankfurt (Germany)
- From 25 October 2026: Makassar is 7 hours ahead of Frankfurt
- From 28 March 2027: Makassar is 6 hours ahead of Frankfurt
Sydney (Australia)
- From 4 April 2027: Makassar is 2 hours behind Sydney
- From 3 October 2027: Makassar is 3 hours behind Sydney
Daylight and the sun over Makassar
Makassar sits at -5.15°, 119.43°
Longest day
12h 25m of daylight
Shortest day
11h 49m of daylight
Yearly swing
0h 36m between them
Day length here barely changes: 12h 25m at its longest and 11h 49m at its shortest, a difference of only 36 minutes across the whole year. Makassar is close enough to the equator that the seasons barely register in daylight terms, which is part of why daylight saving would serve no purpose at this latitude.
Clock time versus solar time
Makassar's clock is unusually well matched to the sun: local noon falls within 2 minutes of the moment the sun is actually overhead. Most cities sit further out, because time zones follow borders rather than longitude.
